Biographical Information

Dr. Prabhat Kumar Mandal is presently working as a scientist in Thick Seam Mining & Strata Mechanics Department, Central Institute of Mining & Fuel Research (CIMFR formerly CMRI), Barwa Road, Dhanbad, a national laboratory under the aegis of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), an autonomous body under Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. He graduated in Mining Engineering in 1993 from Bengal Engineering College, Shibpur under the University of Calcutta (CU). He did his M. Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. He did his PhD from Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), Shibpur in 2010. He joined erstwhile Central Mining Research Institute (CMRI) presently Central Institute of Mining & Fuel Research (CIMFR)in the year 1994 and started his professional career as a scientist. Since joining in CMRI, as a project leader and team member extensive field and laboratory investigations related to rock-mechanics/strata-control have been conducted for more than 40 industry sponsored /in-house projects including four government aided S & T projects. He is at present engaged in design of mining methods especially in thick seam mining and partial extraction below built-up areas for optimal extraction of thick and complex coal deposits for better production, productivity and safety. He was involved in various research and development programmes including mechanized depillaring by cable bolting as high roof support, development of underpinning based depillaring of thick contiguous seams/sections under very weak and highly laminated parting, eco-friendly mining like wide stall Mining under various surface and sub-surface features (under protected forest land, hill escarpment, aquifer etc) with or without stowing. He has also got expertise in instrumentation and monitoring in underground mining (manual/microprocessor based) and deeply associated with strata/ground behavior and control study through instrumentation and monitoring in various underground coal mines for assessing suitability of the methods and modification of existing mining methods based on the studies. He has been awarded CSIR Golden Jubilee-CMRI Whitaker Award for his outstanding R & D work in the field of mining and cognate subjects in the year 2001. He is also recipient of Institution of Engineers' Hindustan Zinc Award and MGMI Silver Medal. He has more than 60 research papers to his credit published in various national and international journals, seminars, symposia and workshops volumes besides two patents on mining methods filed in India.
